[Verse 1]
      D A
I was layin' 'round town, just spendin' my time
G D
Out of a job, and not earnin' a dime,
       D G
When a fella steps up, and said, “I suppose
     A D
That you're a bronc rider by the looks of your clothes."
           D A
"Well, you figures me right, I'm a good one,” I claim.
        G D
"Do you happen to have any bad ones to tame?"
         D G
He says "I got one, and he’s a bad one to buck,
   A D
At throwin' good cowboys, he's had lots of luck."

[Verse 2]
D A
He offers me ten, I said, "I'm your man,
G D
A bronc never lived that I cannot fend."
  D G
A bronc never tried, never drew breath,
       A D
An’ if I cannot ride them, they starves plumb to death.
         D A
Well, he says "Get your saddle, and I'll give you a chance."
      G D
So we hop in the buckboard, and drive to the ranch.
    D G
An' early next mornin', and right after chuck,
A D
Step out to see if this outlaw can buck.

[Verse 3]
Eb Bb
Well, down in the horse corral, standin' alone,
       Bb Eb
Was an old caballo, a Strawberry Roan.
    Eb Ab
Had little pin ears that touched at the tip,
         Bb
He had a big .44 brand upon his left hip.

       Eb Bb
He had spattled old legs, and he had pigeon toes,
Bb Eb
Little pig eyes and a big Roman nose.
Eb Ab
U-necked and old, with a long lower jaw.
Bb Eb
I could tell with one eye, he's a regular outlaw.

[Verse 4]
  Eb Bb
I got the blind on 'im with a terrible fight.
  Bb Eb
I cinched on the saddle, and I girded it tight.
    Eb Ab
And then I step on 'im and I pulled down the blind!
Bb
Look out, boys, he's gonna unwind!
   Eb Bb
He bowed his old neck and I'll say he unwound,
    Bb Eb
He seemed to quit livin' down here on the ground.
     Eb Ab
Went up to the east, and comes down in the west,
Bb Eb
With me in the saddle, just a-doin' my best.

[Verse 5]
F C
He sure is a frog-walker, and he heaves a big sigh.
C F
He only lacks wings, for to be on the fly.
F Bb
He turns his old belly right up to the sun,
   C
He sure is a sun-fishin' son-of-a-gun.
     F C
He's about the worst bronco I've seen on the range.
         C F
He could turn on a nickel and give you some change.
F Bb
Came down on all fours, turned on his side,
  C F
I don't see how I kept from losin' my hide!

[Verse 6]
F C
Well, I lost my stirrup, and I lost my hat.
      C F
I was pullin' at leather, just blind as a bat.
F Bb
With one phenomenal jump, he made a high dive,
C F
And sent me a-windin' up there in the sky.
  F C
I turned forty flips, and I come down to earth,
C F
Sat there a-cussin' the day of his birth.
  F Bb
I know that there's ponies that I cannot ride,
C
Some of them livin', they haven't all died.
           F C
Well, I'll betcha ten dollars there ain't no man alive,
         C F
That can stay on Old Strawberry when he makes his high dive.
(spoken) - Yee-hah!!!
